Cluster diffusivity: Structure, correlation, and scaling

چکیده
We have investigated the diffusion of clusters on a triangular lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. A cluster is defined as a two‐dimensional collection of particles which are connected to each other, either directly or indirectly through other particles in the cluster, by nearest‐neighbor bonds. Each particle is allowed to hop, with probability αδb/2/(α−δb/2+αδb/2), to a vacant nearest‐neighbor site with the constraint that the hop does not break the cluster. The change in the number of bonds is given by δb. The equilibrium clusters are correlated animals with structure controlled by the parameter α. We show that the diffusion coefficient of a cluster can be decomposed into two factors. One is a measure of the weighted length of the ‘‘active’’ perimeter and the other is a measure of the correlation between pairs of steps taken by the cluster during its walk. The perimeter measure is asymptotically proportional to cluster size N, as anticipated for ramified animals, but it crosses over to N1/2 dependence for smaller compact clusters with α>1. Our focus is on the accurate determination of the size and structure dependence of the correlation factor, which is more sensitive to statistical fluctuations. As a result, we describe the scaling of the cluster diffusion coefficient with cluster size. Disciplines Biological and Chemical Physics | Physics Comments This article is published as Kang, H. Large Eddy Simulation of turbulent thermal convection using a Mixed Scale Diffusivity Model
The Mixed Scale Diffusivity Model, originally developed in the case of the differentially heated cavity, is applied to compute turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard flow in an infinite fluid layer at Pr = 0.71 for a large range of Rayleigh numbers (6.3 × 10 – 2 × 10). The effect of this SGS modelling, which adjusts locally the SGS diffusivity to the thermal scales of the flow and results in variable PrSGS ...
متن کاملModel of Cluster Growth and Phase Separation : Exact Results in One Dimension
We present exact results for a lattice model of cluster growth in 1D. The growth mechanism involves interface hopping and pairwise annihilation supplemented by spontaneous creation of the stable-phase, +1, regions by overturning the unstable-phase, −1, spins with probability p. For cluster coarsening at phase coexistence, p = 0, the conventional structure-factor scaling applies. In this limit o...
متن کاملDiffusion of two-dimensional epitaxial clusters on metal (100) surfaces: Facile versus nucleation-mediated behavior and their merging for larger sizes
For diffusion of two-dimensional homoepitaxial clusters of N atoms on metal (100) surfaces mediated by edge atom hopping, macroscale continuum theory suggests that the diffusion coefficient scales like DN∼N−β with β=3/2. However, we find quite different and diverse behavior in multiple size regimes. These include: (i) facile diffusion for small sizes N<9; (ii) slow nucleation-mediated diffusion...
متن کاملRevisiting blob theory for DNA diffusivity in slitlike confinement.
Blob theory has been widely applied to describe polymer conformations and dynamics in nanoconfinement. In slit confinement, blob theory predicts a scaling exponent of 2/3 for polymer diffusivity as a function of slit height, yet a large body of experimental studies using DNA produce a scaling exponent significantly less than 2/3. In this work, we develop a theory that predicts that this discrep...
متن کاملCorrigendum: Universality in boundary domain growth by sudden bridging
We report on universality in boundary domain growth in cluster aggregation in the limit of maximum concentration. Maximal concentration means that the diffusivity of the clusters is effectively zero and, instead, clusters merge successively in a percolation process, which leads to a sudden growth of the boundary domains. For two-dimensional square lattices of linear dimension L, independent of ...
